This webinar will provide an overview of Children’s Corps‘ dynamic recruitment, screening and selection techniques to strengthen the capacity of the child welfare workforce in NYC and beyond.
Inspired by Teach for America and adapted for child welfare, Children’s Corps (CC) was created by Fostering Change for Children to create a community of practice for child welfare caseworkers, with training and support systems embedded into their two-year experience and beyond. The CC program was piloted in 2011 with the help of Columbia School of Social Work (CSSW), the Center for the Study of Social Policy (CSSP) and New York City’s Administration for Children’s Services.
CC goals include improving caseworker retention rates, improving opportunities and outcomes for children and families, and creating future leaders in child welfare. Now in its 4th year, CC currently has 86 CC members in the field, each carrying an average caseload of 12-15. This means that CC members are positively impacting more than 1000 children and youth, or approximately 1 in 10 children in New York City’s child welfare system. CC has a proven track record of success in caseworker retention as well, with a current one-year retention rate of 87%.
This webinar will focus on CC’s Strategic Recruitment & Selection. CC members are recruited from a variety of undergraduate majors at a range of higher education institutions and major online job sites. Application and interview processes screen candidates for specialized child welfare competencies that have been researched and tested to find the right individuals for this critical work. Presenters will share the steps involved in creating and implementing this model; specific strategies, tips and tools; and, lessons learned, agency experiences, and efforts to strengthen effectiveness and impact.
The child welfare workforce is a critical factor in strengthening vulnerable children, youth and families. We know there are gaps and challenges we must address to better develop and support the workforce in their challenging yet rewarding roles.
