The following is an announcement from JooYeun Chang, Associate Commissioner, Children’s Bureau.

Dear Colleagues:
I am pleased to announce a new Children’s Bureau resource, Supporting Youth in Foster Care in Making Healthy Choices: A Guide for Caregivers and Caseworkers on Trauma, Treatment, and Psychotropic Medications. This guide is a companion to the previously released Making Healthy Choices: A Guide on Psychotropic Medications for Youth in Foster Care. The new guide contains helpful information for caregivers and caseworkers, including a message from youth, understanding trauma and different treatments, seeking help for youth, and monitoring treatment and supporting progress.

Similar to the guide for youth, this new resource was developed by Children’s Bureau staff in collaboration with youth, other Federal agencies, and national organizations, including physicians and psychiatrists. It was tested in the field by foster parents, caseworkers, supervisors, and others; their feedback was incorporated into the final version of the guide.

I am pleased that the guide will be posted on the Child Welfare Information Gateway. You can access the guide at https://www.childwelfare.gov/pubs/mhc-caregivers/.

The guide for youth is also available through Information Gateway athttps://www.childwelfare.gov/pubs/makinghealthychoices/.

A limited number of hard copies will be available in the coming weeks in English and Spanish and can be ordered by contacting Information Gateway by phone800.394.3366 or email info@childwelfare.gov.
